This region that spans from 2,600-4,500m is the most historic dzongkhag if the number of ancient temples and sacred sites is counted. Bumthang consists of the four mountain valleys of Ura, Chumey, Tang and Choekhor ('Bumthang'), although occasionally the entire district is referred to as Bumthang valley.
Jambay Lhakhang
It is oldest temple in Bhutan, built in 7th century by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gonpo, on the same day as Kichu Temple in Paro, in order to subdue a Giant Demoness.
Jakar Fort
According to legend Lam Ngagi Wangchuk in 1549, saw a big white big bird rose suddenly in the air and settled on a spur of hill. This was interpreted as an important omen, and the hill was chosen as the site for a monastery and name as Jakar (white bird). Later in 1667 built dzong by Chogyal Mingyur Tempa for administration and defense purposes from Tibetan invasion and named as Jakar Dozong (Castle of the White Bird).
Wangdicholing Palace
The extensive palace of Wangdicholing was built in 1857 on the site of a battle camp of the Trongsa Governor, Jigme Namgyal. First King of Bhutan Ugyen Wangchuk, chose it as his principal residence.
Kujey Lhakhang
Kujey is main significant in history of Bhutan, where it was a first footstep took place for foundation of Buddhism in Bhutan during 8th century, after Guru Padmasambhava subdue local spirit named Shelging Karpo and kept body imprint (Ku-Body and Jey-Imprint) on the rock after meditating three months in that particular cave. The old temple was built in 17th century and other two building built later.
Tamzhing Monastery
Tamzhing monastery was built in 1501 by Terton Pema Lingpa, main important figure for spreading Nyingmapa Buddhist linage in Bhutan and later set up the Buddhist monastic school by central monastic body of Bhutan.
Meber Tsho
A famous sites for Buddhist pilgrimage, where Terton Pema Lingpa revealed a several treasures from Mebar Tsho. As a legend, Pema Lingpa jumped into the lake with the burning butter lamp on his hand and then suddenly he emerged back on the rock with the lamp still burning and holding a treasure chest. After that the lake is known as Meber Tsho or Burning Lake.
